Part 8 - Introduction to CPTLiq: A PBEE Tool for the CPT
Переглядів 2,2 тис.2 роки тому
This final video of the short course series introduces you to CPTLiq, a spreadsheet that we developed to implement the simplified performance-based liquefaction hazard analysis methods for the CPT. I walk you through the spreadsheet, demonstrate how it works, and summarize its current uses and limitations. The current version of CPTLiq is v1.42 and can be downloaded here: www.dropbox.com/s/tltu...
Part 7 - Simplified Performance-Based Liquefaction Hazard Analysis with the CPT
Переглядів 1,8 тис.2 роки тому
This video introduces you to the the methodology for approximating performance-based liquefaction hazard analysis results for the CPT using simplified map-based methods.
Part 6 - Introduction to Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering and Liquefaction
Переглядів 2 тис.2 роки тому
This video introduces you to the concept of performance-based earthquake engineering and its application to liquefaction triggering hazard. I explain the difference between a deterministic analysis, a pseudo-probabilistic analysis, and a performance-based analysis. I tell a story of an experience and application with the legendary T. Leslie Youd.
Part 5 - Predicting Lateral Spread Displacement and Volumetric Settlements
Переглядів 2,9 тис.2 роки тому
This video introduces you to the most commonly used methods today for predicting lateral spread displacements and post-liquefaction settlements using the CPT.
Part 4 - Crash Course in Soil Liquefaction and Triggering
Переглядів 2,6 тис.2 роки тому
This video gives a brief summary of soil liquefaction and how we predict its triggering in the United States. A brief introduction to the concept of probability of liquefaction is also provided.
Part 3 - Crash Course in Seismic Hazard Analysis
Переглядів 4,3 тис.2 роки тому
This video briefly explains the differences between a deterministic seismic hazard analysis (DSHA) and a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) in easy-to-understand terms. The benefits of a PSHA approach are shown.
Part 1 - Introduction to Performance-Based Liquefaction Hazard Analysis Project and Short Course
Переглядів 5 тис.2 роки тому
Hey, Everybody! This is the first video in an 8-part shortcourse introducing you to the concept of performance-based liquefaction hazard analysis (PLHA) and a simplified approach that is easy enough that you can use it on your projects in the United States. This video introduces the topic and the shortcourse.
CEEN 641 - Lecture 5B - BONUS Content on Using Dynamic Methods to Obtain Elastic Properties of Soil
Переглядів 2 тис.2 роки тому
This lecture comes from my CEEN 545 class, but it's applicable here. It will introduce you to the concept of using dynamic geophysical methods in-situ to measure the elastic (i.e., low-strain) properties of the soil. If you like this content, go check out all of my lectures in my CEEN 545 Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering series! Now my friends Dr. Brady Cox and Dr. Clint Wood won't be mad at...
CEEN 641 - Lecture 5 - Soil Stress, Strain, & Invariants
Переглядів 6 тис.2 роки тому
The engine for developing a constitutive model for soil is based on fundamental stress-strain relationships in the soil. This lecture introduces you to the basic concepts of understanding stress-strain in soil, both in 2D and 3D. Volumetric and deviatoric strains are discussed, as well as the use of invariants to predict these strains. Various methods to measure or "guesstimate" the proportiona...
CEEN 641 - Lecture 4 - Capillarity, Partial Saturation, and Intro to Unsaturated Soil Mechanics
Переглядів 3,8 тис.2 роки тому
This lesson reviews the important topic of pore pressures and how they contribute to effective stresses in the soil. We discuss capillarity in the soil, partial saturation above the water table, and some introductory concepts related to unsaturated soil mechanics.
CEEN 641 - Lecture 1 - Crash Course Review of Basic Soil Mechanics
Переглядів 17 тис.2 роки тому
Welcome back!! This is the first lecture in my CEEN 641 Advanced Soil Mechanics course. In this lecture, I review three of the most important concepts in basic Soil Mechanics: Phase diagrams and phase relationships of all soils; Relative density of course-grained soils; and Atterberg limits and plasticity of fine-grained soils. We solve a complicated fill/borrow problem together, and I introduc...
A New Way to Analyze Liquefaction Triggering and 2 Common Mistakes Engineers Make with Liquefaction

It was recorded and shared here with you! Abstract: Since the introduction of the Seed & Idriss simplified procedure in 1971, liquefaction triggering analysis for sands has continuously been expanded and refined. Ques...
CEEN 545 - Lecture 17 - Wave Propagation, Part II
Переглядів 2,4 тис.3 роки тому
In this second part of the the 2-part series, I provide an example of a wave moving through a multi-layer rod. I demonstrate how transmission and reflected waves are computed. This lesson introduces the idea of wave refraction and its application to body waves from earthquakes. Finally, I go over the idea of damping. I introduce the topic of material damping, and briefly cover the concept of ra...
CEEN 545 - Lecture 16 - Wave Propagation, Part I
Переглядів 4,3 тис.3 роки тому
This lesson introduces you to the derivation of the 1D wave equation, which is one of the most important fundamental developments in the field of materials science. We also discuss what happens when waves encounter an "impedance boundary," or a boundary between two materials with different sets of dynamic properties. You will learn how propagating waves diverge, with a part that transmits into ...

At 35:39 you hace a mistake in the delta e2 expression. The numerator inside the log is wrong. It should be sigma 0 + delta sigma - sigma_p. Please verify.

Dr. Franke - thank you for the content. How are the results of the modified proctor actually applied in the field, for situations where the soil won't be disturbed, say at the base of a spread footing. Suppose the optimum moisture is determined, how is a contractor actually increasing or decreasing the moisture % in the field, and to what depth? The layer beneath said depth won't be tested or compacted, isn't the compaction only as good as that beneath layer?

Software seems quite capable. Can it also be used for generating time histories to match floor response specta, noting that in this case the structure would have filtered out a good portion of the ground frequency content. Would you use real earthquake signals as seeds for the FRS generation or a stationary random signal could be more appropriate for the FRS ??

Thank you for the great explanation. The procedure for obtaining soil samples for testing equipment is not clear. Take a soil sample with a rough N value using a standard penetration test. The operation is performed without knowing which depth of soil is suitable for the soil sample. If stones are mixed in, the inspection machine will not work properly. Obtain it at 1cm along with the N value data using an in-situ test machine. At the same time, data on loading, rotation, and settlement amount will be obtained. Perform the calculation to obtain C and φ. At that time, the singularity can be identified as the part that is causing the slope failure. C and φ are design data for renovation and construction, and must also be used as data for disaster prevention.
